Today we're here with Professor Theo Liebmann the Director of Clinical Programs at Hofstra University School of Law. Professor Liebmann, what are the major challenges in representing children and families in family court today? Theo: I would say that the primary challenge that we have to confront right now in family court is the fact that there are very few resources out there in terms of services that can be provided to children and to families and incredible amount of creativity is required both of the judges and of the practitioners in family court. Just as an example, many of our clients need therapeutic services or intensive casework services or need drug treatment services, and because there are so few out there, judges and attorneys have to think creatively about other ways those needs can be met by the clients, the children, the families that are in family court. A secondary challenge that a lot of the family court practitioners and judges have to meet, is that there are many more cases than can be handled as well as the judges and practitioners would like to. So, for example, if an attorney for a child has a caseload of 120 clients, there are things that that attorney's going to find difficult to do for every single one of those clients.
